What we provide
Interpreting is the act of facilitating spoken language communication between two or more parties who do not share a common language by delivering, as faithfully as possible, the original message from source into target language. This is the foundation. Community interpreting involves much more.
Face to Face interpreting
SIS offer high quality face to face interpreting where the situation requires a linguist to be physically present.
Telephone Interpreting
Through 2 way telephone call, conference call or SIS group call.
Video Interpreting
With video interpreting all participants can take part from home or office.
Translation Work
Translation involves the accurate written transmission of meaning, form and tone from one language (source) to another (target) that is easily understood by the reader(s).
Social Prescribing
Social prescribing is a way of supporting people to find help for social, emotional or practical issues.
Community Research
SIS Community Research enables members of migrant communities to engage with and contribute to health and social care research, needs assessments and consultations commissioned by the NHS, Brighton & Hove City Council, NIHR, Healthwatch and other public services.
Health Promotion
Health Promotion aims to engage and empower individuals and communities to choose healthy behaviours, and make lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and other morbidities. It combines health education with behaviour change support and enables people to increase control and participate in decision making to improve their health.
Community Engagement
SIS works tirelessly to help and support migrant communities to engage, participate and become involved in the wider community and society to benefit everyone and improve wellbeing. If people are engaged, then organisations, social groups and public service are more likely to achieve long-term and sustainable dialogue, outcomes and relationships.
Community Advocacy
Community Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the services they need. Community Advocates take the side of the individual.
Sectors we’ve worked in
About us
Sussex Interpreting Services (SIS) is an independent social enterprise and charitable company working to relieve the poverty of individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic communities (BME) by providing community interpreting and translation, bilingual health advocacy services, confidential advice, assistance and information. SIS exists to enable full access, for people with language needs, to publicly funded services in order to improve health, education and quality of life. Our vision is of an inclusive and diverse society where people of all cultural and linguistic backgrounds are able to live in harmony, play a full and valued role and enjoy the same rights. Our activity started in 1994 as part of the Brighton Council for Voluntary Services in 1994. The Brighton, Hove and Lewes Interpreting Project as it was known then became Sussex Interpreting Services in 1999.
