We specialise in slow ferment, handmade breads and baked goods, made with locally sourced ingredients. We’re also a social enterprise, aiming to embed in the fabric of our area and contribute to the wellbeing of our community in all its facets.

We have some great baking themed gifts available in our online shop - from postal stotties and pease pudding to Geordie Tea for 2 Box. We also have our Scotty the Stottie merchandise (children's illustrated book series, cuddly toy and T shirts), baking kits, honey and gift vouchers available too!

Bakery Days & Courses

Our bakery days & courses are the perfect treat for yourself or gift for friends and family. Book a specific date – or choose a gift voucher to give as a present. Please note all course prices are inclusive of 20% VAT. Gift Vouchers will be emailed within 24 hours of purchase.

About us

We are Big River Bakery based in Shieldfield - Newcastle - the home of the Stottie – and we believe we can change the world one stottie at a time but need your help.

We are a commercial bakery - shop - cafe and training space- but we do so much more.

We work in the wider community with local businesses, community and charities to deliver our social value into the community.

We employ 17 people and 2 volunteers - 4 of our employees are neurodiverse and supported in the workplace. We are a REAL Living wage employer

All projects are currently funded by ourselves and through the generosity of our customers.

Our current projects for 2025/2026 include:

  • Daily Breakfast Bags to local schools for children not able to access breakfast clubs
  • Facilitate National Stottie Cake Week (February) focusing on the heritage of the North East to help others.

Weekly Kindness Cookie scheme - UK wide (free)

  • Supporting those less fortunate - by donating to charities such as Feeding Families who provide targeted support to those living in food poverty. LDNE, local pop up pantries, homeless hostels and schools.
  • Free food / pay as you feel days - offering free lunches on a weekly basis for all.
  • Free kids baking activities in the holidays
  • Free community baking classes offering wellbeing and social inclusion activities
  • Supporting local community initiatives - including distribution of surplus food to those in need.
